10 Things to Do Right Now to Heal Your Gut

If you read Gut Health and Inflammation: The Hidden Connection, you already know your gut is running the show more than you probably realized. So let’s get practical. No overwhelm, no perfection required. Just ten things you can start today.

1. Drink more water

Not exciting, I know, but your gut needs water to keep everything moving and functioning properly. If you’re not sure how much, a good starting point is half your body weight in ounces. Keep a bottle with you and sip through the day rather than skulling a glass here and there.

2. Eat real food

This isn’t about a perfect diet. It’s about real food. Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, plenty of fiber. And it means stepping away from the ultra-processed stuff too, the packaged, long-ingredient-list foods that are designed to be addictive, not nourishing. You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight, just start swapping one processed thing a day for something real.

Depending on how rough your gut health is right now, this is also where fermented foods and drinks come in, think sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and kombucha. But if you’re really suffering, ease into things gently. Start with simple, easily digestible cooked foods and fruits rather than throwing a whole lot at your gut at once. You can build from there.

3. Cut back on sugary drinks and alcohol

Soft drinks, juices, sweetened coffees, and alcohol all spike your blood sugar and feed the bad bacteria in your gut, letting it multiply and crowd out the good stuff. I’m not here to tell you to never enjoy a wine again, but easing back (even just on weeknights) makes a real difference while you’re healing.

4. Add prebiotics

Prebiotics are the fuel for your good gut bacteria. Think garlic, onion, leeks, asparagus, oats, and bananas. Simple additions, big impact.  You can also add this great product.

5. Add probiotics

Probiotics are the actual good bacteria your gut needs more of, and the fermented foods above are a great natural source. If you want extra support, this is where a quality probiotic supplement comes in – this is the one that I use and swear by, it’s made a massive difference for me.

6. Prioritize your sleep

Your gut runs on its own rhythm, and poor sleep throws that rhythm off just as much as a bad diet does. Aim for a consistent bedtime, and give yourself a real wind-down instead of scrolling until your eyes close.

7. Manage your stress

Your gut and your brain are constantly talking to each other, remember? Chronic stress slows digestion and messes with your gut bacteria. Even five minutes of deep breathing, a short walk, or stepping outside can help take the pressure off.

8. Move your body

You don’t need an intense workout for this one. A daily walk, some stretching, anything that gets you moving supports healthy digestion and keeps things flowing the way they should.

9. How you eat

This one gets overlooked constantly. Sit down. Slow down. Chew properly. No more eating on the run, hunched over your desk, or scrolling your phone between mouthfuls. Your digestion actually starts in your mouth, and if you’re rushing through meals, your gut is working against you before it’s even had a chance.

10. Be consistent, not perfect

You don’t need to do all ten of these flawlessly starting today. Pick two or three, get them into your routine, and build from there. Your gut responds to consistency far more than it responds to perfection.

Small, steady changes really do add up. Give your gut a bit of love and it will thank you for it.
