Oxidative stress might sound like the latest buzzword, or maybe you’ve started noticing it whenever people talk about health. And I bet you’re wondering what on earth it is?! I had certainly never heard of it until I was 49, and I’m in the health industry!
Now that I know, I realize just how important it is to understand the basics and try to get it reduced. Let me explain in a way that’s not as boring as batshit. If you want the heart health side of the story, start here: Oxidative Stress and Heart Health: What Women Over 40 Need to Know
Oxidative stress is what happens when your body has more unstable molecules (called free radicals) than its natural antioxidant defenses can handle. It’s an imbalance. You’re out of whack. More damage than your body can clean up.
It’s linked to aging, inflammation, heart health and literally hundreds of major health issues. Your oxidative stress level is affected by how you eat, sleep, move, manage stress, as well as chemical and environmental toxins. The good news? A lot of that is within your control. AND there are simple, natural ways to help bring it down quickly, and you can start today. This is the Activator I’ve been using daily for over 5 years.
You know how a cut apple goes brown on the bench? Or a bike left out in the rain goes rusty? That’s oxidation. Your body does a version of it every single day.
Just making energy creates tiny unstable molecules called free radicals. Think of them as storm troopers marching around your cells causing damage.
Your body has its own Jedi to deal with them. They’re called antioxidants. You make some yourself, and you get others from food like berries, leafy greens, nuts and olive oil.
When the storm troopers outnumber the Jedi. Add in stress, no sleep, a few too many wines and another takeout dinner, and the storm troopers win.
Most of the time your body can cope. But when there’s too much damage coming in, or your natural defenses are running low (hello, midlife), the balance tips. That’s oxidative stress. And the longer it stays that way (and the more chronic the levels become), the more damage happens.
Nope. A little is normal. Your immune system even uses free radicals to fight off bugs, and the small amount you get from exercise is part of how you get stronger.
It’s about balance, not perfection. You don’t need zero. You just need levels that will allow your body to not only cope, but thrive (BTW, that is possible!!)
A lot of everyday life, as it turns out:
Also, a big part of the issue is our belief system, as well as the trauma we are carrying. This includes generational trauma.
I go through these in detail here: Oxidative Stress and Heart Health: What Women Over 40 Need to Know
If you’re tired but wired and running on coffee and adrenaline, you’ll recognize a few of these. Tired But Wired: The Signs of Burnout Rest Can’t Fix
Here’s the part most women need to hear. Our bodies’ natural defenses tend to become less responsive as we get older. That often lines up with midlife, when many of us are carrying the heaviest load: work, family, sleep that is never enough, and hormones all over the place.
Some researchers also think the drop in estrogen during perimenopause and menopause may play a part, because estrogen has antioxidant properties.
None of this means it’s all downhill. It means this is a really good time to give your body some extra support. Check out my Self Care: The Freedom Project course
This is exactly what I do with the women I work with. As a Self Care Coach, Menopause Coach and PSYCH-K Preferred Facilitator, I help you get to the root of what’s driving the stress, from your daily habits right through to the subconscious beliefs underneath, so your body can thrive again. Not in any simple way. It isn’t a standard test most GPs order, and you can’t feel oxidative stress directly. However, if you look at the different areas of your life that cause oxidative stress, chances are you’ll already know something is off.
When I went to my GP at 49, I said, “I don’t feel like myself anymore.” I couldn’t put my finger on it, but things just didn’t feel right. Very sciency, right?!
Your heart is a muscle that never gets a day off, and it needs a lot of energy to keep going. Researchers are looking at how oxidative stress connects with your blood vessels, with inflammation, and with your cells’ energy.
It’s one pathway among many, not the whole picture. I take a closer look in this post: Oxidative Stress and Heart Health: What Women Over 40 Need to Know
Start with the foundations. They support your body the most:

Your body isn’t helpless against oxidative stress. Inside your cells is a pathway called NRF2, which acts like a switch that turns on your own antioxidant defenses.
The catch is that this system tends to become less responsive as we age, and chronic stress doesn’t help. That’s where a 100% natural activator built on 25+ years of science comes in. It’s designed to support your body’s own NRF2 pathway, working alongside the basics, not instead of them.

Most of the women I work with know what to do. Eat better, sleep more, slow down. And they still can’t seem to do it. Why? Because underneath, there’s often a subconscious belief running the show. Things like rest is lazy, or everyone else comes first.
That’s where PSYCH-K comes in. It’s a gentle way to find and change those beliefs so your body can relax into the changes you’re making.

No, and you wouldn’t want to. Some is part of normal life and even helps your body adapt. The goal is to reduce your oxidative stress level enough for your body to thrive again.
As the name suggests, an activator literally activates certain processes in your body, like the NRF2 pathway. Instead of only adding antioxidants from the outside, it’s about helping your cells switch on their own defenses.
The activator I share is backed by 28 peer reviewed studies, and studies have shown a 40% decrease in a key marker of oxidative stress in just 30 days. Check out the Activator here.
A little, in the short term, and that’s part of how exercise makes you stronger. The trouble comes with lots of intense exercise and no recovery. If you’re new to it, start with a 10 minute walk. If you want to work on bone density, resistance training and even jumping can help. This is the Rebounder I love
Be kind to yourself. You didn’t get here overnight, and you won’t turn it around overnight.
Stop and listen to your body. We’re all different, and what works for me may not be the right fit for you. Pick one or two small things and build from there.
Want to keep going?
