Rest. Feel almost human. Burn out again. Repeat.
If you keep asking yourself why you keep burning out, even when you take the time off, even when you do all the “right” things, there’s a reason.
I spent more than 30 years in corporate finance being brilliant at pushing through. I was so proud of how much I could cope with. Yep, I know. Absolutely a toxic trait. And no amount of pajama days, early nights or long weekends fixed it, because I was only ever dealing with the surface stuff.
If you’re new here, start with Tired But Wired: The Signs of Burnout Rest Can’t Fix and Bubble Baths Won’t Fix Burnout. This post goes one layer deeper.
Not sure if you’re actually burned out? Grab my free guide, 7 Signs You’re in Burnout, and find out in a few minutes.
Burnout isn’t just in your head either, this shit is real. Years of running on empty put real stress on your body, including at the cellular level. That’s why supporting my body became part of my reset, starting with a 100% natural activator backed by more science than you can poke a stick at.
Because rest and routines deal with the symptoms. They don’t touch the root cause of what is driving this pattern.
You can rest. You can say no. You can get more sleep. But if there’s a belief running underneath that says “I have to keep going,” “I’m not good enough” or “I have to do it all myself,” you’ll find yourself right back in the same place a few weeks later. Same life, same wiring, same bucket with a hole in it.
You’ve got two layers going on. The conscious part of you is the one making decisions and reading this right now. The subconscious part is running quietly in the background, with beliefs you picked up long ago, often without ever choosing them. They came from family, school, work and the people around you, and they run on autopilot.
Cell biologist Dr Bruce Lipton, author of The Biology of Belief, says that around 95% of the time our subconscious mind is running the show, with just a measly 5% coming from our conscious mind. He also says that pretty much everything we see, hear, feel or are exposed to up to around the age of 7 becomes our belief system blueprint. And let’s not forget generational beliefs and trauma.
So you can know, logically, that you should rest. But if a belief underneath says “rest is for people who’ve earned it,” your body keeps pushing anyway.
These are just 5 of the many beliefs that can be lurking in the subconscious.
You feel valuable when you’re busy and useful, and guilty the second you stop. A day off doesn’t feel like rest. It feels like failing.
So you never stop. You’re the one holding it all together, at work and at home. Nobody else could possibly do it right.
This one was mine. Being the person who could cope with anything felt like my identity. You get so good at masking that you’re falling apart on the inside while still kicking goals on the outside. Nobody knows, not even you.
So you work twice as hard to prove yourself. You say yes to everything, you stay late, and you wait to be noticed instead of asking for what you’ve earned. (Spoiler alert: you can’t out-achieve a belief that says you’re not enough.)
So you say yes to one more thing, and one more, until you’ve got nothing left for yourself. If this one hits home, my Boundaries ebook is a good place to start.
Want help getting to the bottom of yours? This is exactly what I do with PSYCH-K: finding the beliefs that are running the show and updating them, so your body can stand down. See how PSYCH-K works.
I wish it were as simple as telling yourself “I’m worthy” or “I can rest now.” But the belief sits below your conscious mind, so a pep talk doesn’t reach it. You can say the right words all day, and the old programming still wins.
That’s why the usual advice (take a break, do some yoga, just say no more often) helps for a day and then fizzles. It’s dealing with the surface, and the pattern is sitting underneath.
We’re all different, so treat these as starting points, not set in stone.
This is the work I do with PSYCH-K : finding the beliefs that are running the show, and updating them so your body can finally stand down and you can look after yourself without the guilt. If you’d like to understand how it works, check it out here.
If your burnout feels tied to something heavier, like long-term low mood, anxiety or past trauma, please also talk to your GP or a counselor. Belief work sits alongside that support, not in place of it.

You’re not broken. You’ve been strong for a very long time, running on beliefs you never chose, and eventually your tank is empty.
Notice the beliefs, question them, and get support to change them. That’s how you stop the cycle and actually feel like yourself again.
Rest and routine matter, but your body also needs support while it comes back into balance. For me, that meant pairing rest with that same 100% natural activator.
If this resonated, it doesn’t have to stay this way. I work with high-achieving women who are done running on empty and ready to optimize their health, feel like a million bucks, and actually thrive, not just get by.
